BMW took a markedly divergent approach during the #20 car's first pit stop, loading significantly less fuel than rival Hypercar teams. That decision created the strategic opening that BMW were then able to exploit.
No other Hypercar team replicated the approach, underscoring how unusual and calculated BMW's gamble was.
Context: a team still finding its feet
The timing of the victory makes it all the more striking. Ahead of the 2026 season, Frijns had candidly acknowledged during the pre-season Prologue — held at Imola following the postponement of the Qatar 1812km due to the conflict in the Middle East — that BMW did not yet fully understand the updated M Hybrid V8.
Frijns's own benchmark in Hypercar competition had been a second-place finish at Imola during the 2025 season. The Prologue had at least offered encouragement: the updated car showed strong pace at the Italian circuit.
That backdrop makes Spa a result of genuine consequence rather than a routine win by a dominant package.
Why it matters and what to watch
Frijns's relief at the result — his own word, in effect, given his "had to win" framing — speaks to the weight the team attached to converting this particular strategic opportunity. Frijns's own admission that the team's understanding of the car was incomplete as recently as the Prologue means BMW cannot yet be presumed to have solved their fundamental technical questions. Spa may have been the breakthrough; whether it becomes the foundation of broader progress depends on what the next rounds reveal.
